3 Month Old Baby Dies After Falling Out of Shopping Cart

I read stories like this every-so-often and every time I do, I feel like a knife is digging into my heart. Each and every time, I tell myself to blog about it. Up until now, I have not... so this time I decided to. I feel like this is so so important to share, so this time I am going to.

A three month old baby boy has died while he was secured to his car seat, but put on top of the shopping cart. His car seat fell from the top of the shopping cart in a Kroger parking lot.

Mom's please do not do this.

Please realize that our infant car seats should not go on top of shopping carts. Instead, place the car seat down in the basket area. You will have less room for your groceries but you will go home with your precious baby that you came with.

Some infant car seat makers have made car seats that are able to fit perfectly onto the cart. That does not mean it is safe.

Please do not make this mistake.

In October we were in a Party City looking at Halloween costumes. Their carts are very small and the infant car seat will not fit inside the basket. Mike insisted we put Baby Jack on top of the cart because, well, it fits perfectly. I made Mike carry Baby Jack's car seat through the store. He wasn't happy.

We, as parents, have to understand that accidents happen. That's why they are called accidents. We do not mean for these things to happen, but they do. And sometimes these accidents are irreversible.

My thoughts and prayers go out to this family. I am so sorry this happened.

Most car seats say in the instructions NOT to put it on top of a shopping cart. You wouldnt strap the baby in the front seat even though the instructions say not to? Thoughts and prayers go to the family of the baby. :(

  3. This makes me so sad. :( I'm sure the mother was well intentioned and never thought twice of the danger. I did the same with my first two, because the carriers had clips just for that.. so I assumed it would be safe. Thank goodness I never had anything tragic like this happen, but I did learn from others not to do this again. My prayers go out to this family!

  4. My heart goes to baby and the family. With my oldest we put his carseat on the basket but for some reason with my youngest my heart always said don't do it. But Walmart does have the laying infant seat. I used that but I used the changing mat on the bottom and sanitized it. Those are welded on. I also used the baby backpack till he got to big to hold. That helped a lot. I plan on passing this.

  5. It's so devastating hearing stories like this. I cringe when I see babies' carseats up on carts. This and carseat buckling are things that we have to educate ourselves about!

  6. This is awful! When I had my first son I didn't know you couldn't do this. Now I know, but with two kids I have to say grocery shopping is so hard!! I wish more carts would have BIG FAT warnings!

  7. I also did this with my first two but heard you're not supposed to do it anymore. This is just so sad to read and scary too because my husband tried to get me to do this just last week with our own 3 month old.
