April from Mama on a Green Mission and Courtney from Joy of Momma Joyner host this breastfeeding meme every Tuesday and the topic is always different.
This weeks topic is just to post an update on how your nursing journey is going.
Baby Jack is 3.5 months old now and I have to say… it’s going GREAT!
Jack still has trouble latching sometimes, mostly at night when he is super sleepy. But once he does, he’s a champ! He also has gagging issues and choking issues so when he first latches he gags really bad and then chokes on the milk. I think his fat tongue (because of his Down Syndrome) mixed with my fat nipple (sorry, but true) is what makes him gag. I’m not so sure about the choking. I think that maybe my let down is too much for him? Not sure? But once he hurdles over the first 5 to 10 minutes – he’s good to go!
He is on a great schedule too! He eats while sleeping at about 6:30 am and then takes a long morning nap until about 9:30-10am. Eats. Eats again around 1pm and naps until about 3pm. He eats a couple more times before bedtime at about 10pm and sleeps all the way until about 3am. Not bad, I’d say!
He’s going on 4 months old in a couple of week and I know that is the time period that a lot of pediatricians want us to start our babies on solid food but I plan on holding off for a while. We will see how he is doing at 6 months of age, and then make a decision then. For now, he’s perfectly on Mama’s Liquid Gold haha!
Oh also, he still won’t take a bottle or a paci. We try the paci every time we leave the house, I just bring them with us. If he starts getting fidgety, then I try it. It never works. He pushes it out with his tongue and won’t even attempt to suck on it. Same with bottles. We try every week or two and it is always a fail. Not sure why I keep wasting my milk, haha.
Anyway…
He eats great and is gaining weight like crazy! Considering my little man was a preemie and came 4 weeks early weighing in at only 5 pounds 10 oz. – I’d say he’s doing pretty good.

Baby Jack is such a cutie!! So glad its going so good for you. Evan also chokes sometimes and I actually have to lift him up to get it out. I think it is also my let down, but not every time, mostly when he is going crazy at it.
ReplyDeleteYeah, he chokes and gasps for air, so I have to lift him up til he breathes again. Scary kinda.
DeleteAww, he's so cute! I have some issues too with a forceful let down. My little one is 6 weeks old today and he's gaining weight like a champ too though! :)
ReplyDeleteHe's SOOO Cute!!! Love that picture of you and him looking at each other! Precious!! I've heard infants' gag reflex is near the middle of their tongue so that could be why too? His schedule is amazing and I'm jealous!! LOL We waited til 6 months for solids and I am sorta glad we did, but at almost 8 months she still doesn't eat much baby food. I'm rambling, I know! :) Thanks so much for linking up this week!
ReplyDeleteOH that's interesting about their gag reflex, I had no idea! Oh and also, one of my kids refused all baby food. I kept trying and trying. I actually forced her a bit by tricking her - I'd put the bottle up to her mouth, she open up, and then I'd stick in some cereal :( I wish I could go back and do it all again, differently. Too bad I did not know any better back then. (Now I am rambling haha) She actually fought food up until she ate real food mashed up a bit, or when she got better at chewing. I wish I would have succeeded with BF her. I gave up after a couple of months :(
DeleteLove his smile, what a beautiful happy boy. I'm currently nursing my almost 10 month old.
