Debate with the Danielle’s: Boys with Long Hair

Welcome to Week 50
of
Friendly Debates With The Danielle’s!

Happenings of the Harper Household

Wanna Play?

Each Week Danielle from "Happenings of the Harper Household" and I (Danielle) will host this awesome meme and we would love for you to link up and join us.

There will be a question each week that will require you to decide where you stand regarding that topic, then of course share those thoughts with the world!

RULES:
1.) Please follow the hosts via Facebook: Danielle B. & Danielle H.
2.) If you link up please leave a comment so we can visit you.
3.) This is a meme, so you MUST answer the question in a blog post.
4.) Link directly to the blog post in which you answer the question.
5.) Grab the button and place either in your post or on your blog.
(You can find the html code in my right side bar).
6.) At the end of your post leave a suggestion for the following weeks topic.

If we choose your suggestion you will be mentioned and linked to in the following weeks post.

AND THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE:
Please respect each others opinions. This means no bashing of other bloggers in comments on their posts. Kind words and genuine questions are encouraged. If you strongly disagree with someone else the place to address your view point is in a post on your own blog. If we find that you have blatantly disregarded this you will be removed from the linky.

THIS WEEKS TOPIC
Long Hair on Boys?
Yay or Nay?
What do YOU say?

MY OPINION?
NAY, NAY, NAY. Kind of.

I realized this only works up until a certain age…

I was able to buzz my sons hair forever with no complaints. I even did it myself. Well, until he became a teen. Then he decided one day he wanted to keep it long. And how could I argue? He finally had an opinion of his own on his appearance and I felt that I could not interfere. It was not something worth fighting about and he’s a really good kid. This is one of those situations where I decided to “chose my battles” and this was not one of them.

Then one day…

THEN…
in March of 2011 Austin decided to shave his head for St. Baldricks. Every year his school does a St. Baldricks event.

The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is the world’s largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research.
At St. Baldrick’s events all throughout the year, brave volunteers shave their heads, raising funds for research. Like runners in
a marathon, “shavees” collect donations from family, friends and associates. The Foundation receives these funds and makes grants to research experts to find new and better treatments for fighting kids’ cancer.

I was proud. He was the only boy in the whole school with the longest hair so he was the talk of the school!

Now-a-days… Austin likes his hair short again. I’m SO HAPPY about this haha. This is a shot from this past week and he’s been BEGGING me for a hair cut!

  1. I don't mind boys with long hair as long as they take care of it. I don't think either of my boys would want their hair as long as your son's was. In fact, my 9yo has been having his hair buzzed the last 2 yrs after seeing my brother like that. I kind of miss him with somewhat longer hair. My 13 yo wants skateboarder type hair, but he's required to take care of it. Needless to say, it remains semi-short. lol

  2. I'm not big on boys with long hair but I agree that you have to pick your battles. If they take care of it and keep it looking clean and trim then it's okay with me. My son begged for a mohawk and I didn't want to do it at first, but I told him once it was summer I'd do it, so I did and it ended up being the best fit for him right now. We're going 5 months strong with it and everyone loves it on him.

Now that said, he has curly hair, so I hope that he NEVER wants to let it grow long, being that it will be a small fro on him. But I'm sure it will look great on him!

  3. I agree with Mimi - as long as they are taking care of it, it doesn't bother me. I think it's important to foster self-expression whenever possible (within reason, of course). Long vs. short hair won't be a battle in our home.

  5. Your little man is so handsome! I think it's best to let kids choose to express themselves the way they want, as long as they maintain it appropriately. My son is only 2 and my husband and I already have had fights over whether to cut his hair or not!!

  6. My 18 month old has very, very curly hair that reaches about an inch past his shoulders. When my daughter was born, I swore I would never cut her hair until she was old enough to *ask* me to do so and pick a style, and I've vowed to do the same with him - partially because it's so curly I'm afraid it would turn into a big pouffy ball if I did!

  7. I think it's okay for the most part. It's their body and as they grow up, they deserve more autonomy. However, it must be kept clean and healthy.
